ACH and Virginia Beach Correctional Center Celebrate 1 Year of Partnership

(Virginia Beach) – In February 2022, Virginia Beach Correctional Center asked Advanced Correctional Healthcare, Inc. (ACH) and Freedom Behavioral Health, Inc. (FBH) to begin providing emergent care on a handshake deal while contract terms were negotiated. Over the last year, the results from this partnership have been tremendous.

The President and CEO of ACH, Jessica Young, stated, “We appreciate the opportunity to take on challenging projects. Sheriff Stolle and Captain Mapes made it clear they expected us to improve the health of their patient population, and we appreciate the support they have provided us and the trust they have placed in us.”

The correctional center, which houses around 1,100 detainees, had not had a consistent health care provider in place in years. ACH and FBH have a reputation for solving problems by doing the right thing the first time. Their full-time employee retention rate is 74%, and their client retention rate is 95%. Improvements made to the facility included 24/7 nursing in intake, improved segregated patient evaluations, increased oversight on patients experiencing withdrawal, 24/7 access to a practitioner, individualized patient care, continuity of mental health care upon patient release, and an officer wellness program.

In December 2022, the Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) conducted a surprise inspection of the facility. After the two-day audit, the correctional center was found to be upholding the appropriate standards for the health and safety of all detainees within the facility, passing the inspection with a perfect score. The results speak to the quality of the teams Sheriff Stolle and Captain Mapes have put in place and the work being done in the facility to ensure the compliance of over 50 standards relating to detainee care in the facility.

“We are committed to comprehensive whole-person care (physical wellbeing, mental health and addiction recovery). This is a team success - one that was accomplished though multidisciplinary partnerships and the support of Virginia Beach. We are honored to be a part of something so important,” remarked Dr. Melissa Caldwell, the President of Behavioral Health Services at FBH.

Headquartered in Tennessee, Advanced Correctional Healthcare, Inc. (ACH) manages contracts for the care of over 34K patients in 370+ correctional facilities across 21 states. In the last year, they have saved at least 52 lives. Founded in 2020, Freedom Behavioral Health, Inc. is also headquartered in Tennessee and currently serves 222 clients.
